Our Pediatrics Team

Dr. Shand completed her pediatric residency training, with a distinction in research, at the University of Rochester after graduating from the University at Buffalo. She then completed subspecialty training in pediatric blood disorders at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the National Cancer Institute, as well as a clinical ethics fellowship at the University of Rochester, where she serves on the faculty.

Dr. Shand provides comprehensive, family-centered pediatric care at Trillium Health and has a special interest in the impact of food access on iron deficiency and child development. She and her husband are distance runners, have two teenage sons, and enjoy outdoor activities in all seasons.

Dr. Vattana is a Rochester native who graduated from Irondequoit High School in 2009. She went to the University of Buffalo for college where she completed her undergraduate degrees in Biomedical Sciences and Spanish Language. She then stayed at the University of Buffalo to complete her medical doctorate. Dr. Vattana completed her residency training in General Pediatrics at Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester in June 2021, and became Board Certified in General Pediatrics in October of 2021. She joined Trillium Health Pediatrics in 2021 as a staff physician. In 2022, Dr. Vattana was accepted to the United Hospital Fund’s Pediatrics for an Equitable Developmental Start Learning Network Fellowship Program where, as a Fellow, she is working to improve access to breastfeeding resources and support to her patients and their families. She was named Medical Director of Trillium Health Pediatrics in June of 2022.

In her spare time, Dr. Vattana enjoys running and indoor cycling as well as traveling, exploring new restaurants and volunteering as a board member of the Laotian American Scholarship Foundation of Rochester. Her favorite part of Rochester is its rich history of progressive thinkers and innovators, and she is thrilled to be able to contribute to Rochester’s future as a pediatrician.

Dr. Smith-Burke grew up in Virginia and attended the University of Virginia for both her undergraduate and medical degrees. She moved to Rochester to complete her pediatric residency training. Dr. Smith-Burke is Board Certified in Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Smith-Burke and her husband have 3 grown children, and this summer welcomed their first grandchild. In her free time she enjoys yoga, walking her dog (Banjo), gardening, spending time with family in the Adirondacks or at the beach, and cheering for the Buffalo Bills.

Dr. Kontor completed her residency at Henry Ford Health System, in Detroit, Michigan. She attended medical school at Semmelweis University Medical School. In her spare time, Dr. Kontor enjoys ski patrol, traveling and spending time with family.

Emily went to Daemen College in Buffalo and graduated with her Masters in Physician Assistant studies. She lives with her dog, 2 cats, and 8 goats! When Emily is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, and doing puzzles. She looks forward to building long-lasting relationships with her patients and providing everyone with the care that they deserve.

Shalonda is a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with specialized expertise in emergency medicine and newborn care. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. John Fisher University and completed her Master of Science in Nursing at Stony Brook University.

With years of experience in high-acuity emergency departments and neonatal settings, Shalonda brings a calm, compassionate, and skilled presence to every child she treats. She is passionate about supporting children and families during some of their most critical and tender moments.

Outside of work, Shalonda is a proud mother of three. Her personal experience as a parent deepens her understanding of the joys and challenges families face, and she strives to partner with parents in every aspect of their child’s care. In her free time, she enjoys planning celebrations and traveling with her family.
